On January 10, 2024, a groundbreaking ceremony for the South Saad Al-Abdullah City housing project by the China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC), a member of the China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd., was held. Over 60 guests, including Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jianwei, officials from the Kuwaiti authorities, and representatives from the Chinese companies concerned, attended the event.

In his speech, Ambassador Zhang hailed the fruitful results of Belt and Road cooperation between China and Kuwait over the past decade, and said China is ready to work with the Kuwaiti side to deliver the outcomes of the meeting between Chinese and Kuwaiti leaders in Hangzhou and deepen our practical cooperation in various areas. He hoped Chinese enterprises will complete the construction to a high standard with close coordination and collaboration from the Kuwaiti side, saying that this will bring benefits to the Kuwaiti people.

Chairman of the Kuwaiti Parliamentary Housing Committee Fayez Al-Jumhour and Acting General Manager of Kuwait’s Public Authority for Housing Welfare Rashid Al-Enezi addressed the event respectively. They praised the capabilities of major Chinese enterprises to undertake large projects and said they will enhance cooperation with the Chinese side to advance housing construction and development in Kuwait at a faster pace.

The South Saad Al-Abdullah City project, the country’s largest housing project, covers an area of about 64 square kilometers. Once completed, it will offer more than 20,000 housing units. Under the $1.12 billion contract, the CGGC will build new main roads and pipelines for the city project.
